This winter 2025, Chesa Marchetta will open in Sils Maria, Switzerland, the second hotel opened by Artfarm, following the Fife Arms in Braemar, Scotland in 2019. Recognized as the cultural center of the Engadin, Sils Maria has inspired world famous writers, philosophers, artists and musicians, including Friedrich Nietzsche, Marcel Proust, Alberto Giacometti, Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse, Marc Chagall and William Faulkner, due to both its breathtaking surroundings and magical quality of light.

Chesa Marchetta was previously an acclaimed restaurant and pensiun owned by the Godly family from 1947, and played host to many well-known names during this period including Gerhard Richter and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Over the past four years, Chesa Marchetta has been redeveloped to create a warm and welcoming 13-bedroom hotel and 46-cover restaurant with adjoining three-bedroom house also available to hire.

Inspired by the stories of artists, musicians, writers and philosophers who have spent time in Engadin, Sils Maria, Iwan and Manuela Wirth have selected a collection of historic and modern masterpieces, contemporary highlights, and outdoor sculptures which can be discovered throughout Chesa Marchetta.

In the restaurant, guests are surrounded by landmark works from influential artists including Alberto Giacometti’s ‘L’Atelier de Stampa: “Tête de Diego sur socle” enveloppée dans un linge’ (1956) and ‘Sculptures et bol dans l’atelier.’ These are shown alongside Philip Guston’s ‘Stone Wall’ (1971) and works by Wolf Traut and Adriaen van Ostade.

The Lounge Bar features striking works by Louise Bourgeois, including ‘SPIDER II’ (1995) and ‘Janus in Leather Jacket’ (1968) alongside Nicolas Party’s vibrant ‘Landscape’ (2020). Adding a dramatic counterpoint are three chandeliers by Jason Rhoades from the epilogue of his critically acclaimed ‘Pussy Trilogy,’ luring the viewer into a meticulously engineered world in which the sublime, seductive and sexualized commingle with the chaotic and subversive.

Inside the corridors of Chesa Marchetta you can find works including David Zink Yi’s multi-part glazed stoneware installation, ‘All My Colours’ (2023), Daniel Spoerri’s ‘Knochenbild’ (1989), Valentin Carron’s ‘L’envie’ (2009), and Untitled works by Subodh Gupta (2006). The walls also celebrate a number of Swiss painters including Alexandre Calame, Valentin Carron, Gottlieb Emil Rittmeyer and Daniel Spoerri.

Outdoor sculptures on view include William Kentridge’s ‘Stroke’ (2022) developing from the South African artist’s practice inspired by puppetry, film and stage props, and Paul McCarthy’s ‘Santa Long Neck’ (2004), a playful desire to taint the sugary-sweet image of Christmas.

The redevelopment has been led by architect Luis Laplace, Principal of Laplace—the creative force behind a number of spaces from Artfarm and Hauser & Wirth, including The Audley pub and Mount St restaurant in Mayfair, London, and our galleries in Paris, Somerset and Menorca. The award-winning studio has an established reputation in executing exceptional adaptive reuse efforts and creating cultural spaces.

The restaurant, which takes its inspiration from Maria and Christina Godly’s famous and innovative use of seasonal ingredients—celebrating the marriage of Italian and Swiss cultures—will be open to both hotel guests and non-residents.
