Three Questions for ... Es Devlin
In the latest edition of Three Questions for—in which we cross-examine some of our favorite cultural figures—we caught up with British artist and designer Es Devlin as she prepared for her first retrospective in Europe, opening October 2 at the Design Museum in London.
Desert Island question. If you could bring only one album, what would it be?
The album I find myself returning to again and again is Court and Spark by Joni Mitchell.
What object would you smuggle home from a museum?
I really want a Naum Garbo sculpture—those beautiful, stretched ligaments on bent Perspex. If I'm allowed, I would steal one of those.
What book is on your nightstand?
Right now, it's My Stroke of Insight by Jill Bolte Taylor.

At Design Museum in London, "Es Devlin: Other Worlds" celebrates Devlin’s 30-year creative practice across sculpture, stage design, music, language and light.
British artist and designer Es Devlin’s practice ranges from public sculptures and illuminated installations at the Victoria & Albert Museum, Serpentine Galleries, Imperial War Museum, Somerset House, outside the Tate Modern, Trafalgar Square and the Lincoln Center, to kinetic stage designs at the Royal Opera House, National Theatre and Metropolitan Opera, as well as Olympic Ceremonies, Super-Bowl half-time shows and monumental stage sculptures for large-scale stadium concerts. Devlin is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, a recipient of the Eugene McDermott Award for the Arts at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and visiting professor at the University of Oxford.
